Penguin was founded in 1935 and is today one of the world's premier English language publishers. Today, Penguin has offices in 15 countries, including the US, UK, Australia, South Africa, India and China.
Our China office opened in Beijing in 2005, and operates in two directions - both bringing top global publishing into China, and taking important Chinese works into English for publication around the world. In March 2008, we will publish the Chinese bestselling novel Wolf Totem, which has just been awarded the inaugural Man Asian Literary Prize. We are also about to publish 30 Penguin Classics in Chinese. China is a market of increasing importance to Penguin, not only because of its potential size, but also for the opportunity to bring fascinating and unknown Chinese writing to an international audience. Over the years, Penguin has introduced to English readers several contemporary and classic Chinese novels, including Fortress Besieged (Weicheng) by Qian Zhongshu, Rice (Mi) by Su Tong, Red Sorghum (Hong Gaoliang) by Mo Yan, and Beijing Doll (Beijing Wawa) by Chun Shu.
