CHINA NOW is the UK’s largest ever festival of Chinese culture and an exhibition trail of over 400 works of contemporary Chinese art, including installations, sculptures and photography throughout the UK has been organised. Artists included in the programme include Cao Fei, Xu Bing, Xu Tan, Zhang Xiaogang and Sui Jianguo, who are appearing in galleries such as the Saatchi, Serpentine, Albion as well as the National Museum of Scotland.
Highlights include Neon Sign by He An, commissioned by CHINA NOW – the creation of a 60-metre long neon sign to be installed in Birmingham, in association with the Ikon Gallery in June. Wang Qingson’s work showing at the Albion consists of propaganda. This is done by creating large, computer-manipulated photographs imbued with wry humour and deep-seated iconoclasm towards a; things ‘official’. RMB City by Cao Fei is at the Serpentine this summer. Considered to be one of the leading video artists in China today, Cao Fei will be showing a video and digital art installation. The online art community project in the virtual world of Second Life is an experiment exploring the creative possibilities in the relationship between real and virtual space as well as a reflection of China’s urban and cultural explosion. Huang Yong Ping known for his large scale site-specific installations and sculptures. Frolic will be at The Curve from 25 June to 21 September and aims to explore the complex imperial history between Britain and China in the 19th century, focusing on the Opium Wars. The Saatchi gallery is showing The Revolution Continues: New Art from China. The inaugural exhibition of contemporary Chinese art, which brings together the work of 30 or so of China’s leading artists for a cutting edge survey of recent painting, sculpture and installation.
