What: With the Beijing Olympics taking place in August, the culture of China is being celebrated worldwide.
Birmingham Museums & Art Gallerys programme of exhibitions and events is part of the national CHINA NOW festival, and runs throughout 2008.
Why: From Canton To Guangzhou is a chance to see images of 1860s Canton by Felice Beato alongside contemporary Chinese photographer Xu Peiwus work (pictured).
Beatos photos were a window onto an unknown world for people in Europe at the time, while Peiwus images show the rapid urbanisation and social change of the last century, and critique the citys expansion.
