Sunflower (PG) Running time: 129min Screening as part of The Showrooms CHINA NOW series, Zhang Yangs fourth film, Sunflower, was released in 2005 and tracks the relationship between a father and son over three decades. Set in Beijing, the story is split into three separate parts: childhood, adolescence and adulthood. When protagonist Xiangyang, played in different stages of his life by actors Fan Zhang, Gao Ge and Haidi Wang, is eight years old, his artist father (Sun Haiying) returns from the labour camp in which he was interned during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. With his dreams crushed and his hands injured, the painter tries to make his son live out his thwarted dreams of artistic success, starting a cycle of rebellion and resentment that still divides them two decades later.
