Five Circles Arts Festival: Dance Now and China Now Debate

Five Circles Arts Festival: Dance Now and China Now Debate

09/05/08

Dance and debate, they are both on the menu as a part of "Circle Three" of the Five Circles Arts Festival mounted by Chinatown Arts Space taking place on June 13th and 14th. Circles one and two of the Five Circles Arts Festival have featured cross-cultural exchanges of hip hop rap, with Beijing's Dragon Tongue Squad, and classic film and contemporary score, with live musical accompaniment of the film Song of the Fisherman.
Featuring the choreography of Liu Qi, Guangdong Modern Dance Company deputy artistic director, and Anh Ngoc Nguyen, Wayne McGregor Random Dance & Phoenix Dance Theatre (Vietnam/UK), Dance Now will explore the notions of connection and renewal through the art of dance. Union Dance Company member Maggie Ho-Ki Kwan will also take part in the performances that will be taking place at the Lilian Baylis Theatre, Sadler's Wells on June 13th and 14th at 8pm.
If you happen to head out earlier on the June 14th, you can catch the debate CHINA NOW at 5:30pm before the Dance Now performance. China Now's topic of discussion will deal with cultural exchanges and whether they are driven by artists, funders, or the government, and does it all matter in the end.
With a panel comprised of CHINA NOW chief executive Simon Heale, CAS Creative Director David Ka-shing Tse, Liu Qi, and chaired by Sadler's Wells producer Emma Gladstone, everything seems in place for the makings of an intriguing and thought-provoking evening. Admission is free for the debate, more of a reason to go and to check it out!
Next up for the Five Circles, circles four and five, this segment of the festival will deal with the commission of public works of art in the heart of London Chinatown. Working alongside Shaftsbury PLC, CAS hope to bring about the commission of a mural and a sculpture in the Horse & Dolphin Yard and on Wardour Street in Chinatown. Public consultation for the pieces have already started and will continue until midnight May 11th.
