Freedom of Expression

12/05/08

Freedom of expression is something that most of us take for granted. But when Yan Lianke decided to write a book, Serve The People, on the subject, it was banned in his native China. Despite the country –wide ban, it received great acclaim on the internet and is out now in the UK. Serve The People is a steamy parody of the cult of Mao during China’s cultural revolution. It tells teh story of a kinky counter-revolutionary general's wife, who gets her rocks off by smashing up Mao icons, ripping up the Little Red Book and urinating on Mao's epigrams... well, whatever works for you. Lianke will read excerpts from his book and discuss his work in relation to the freedom of expression laws that govern China today, as part of the Southbank Centre’s CHINA NOW series.

Blue Room, Spirit level, Southbank Centre, Belvedere Rd, SE1 (020-7921 0600) may 18, 7:45pm.
