The British Council

The British Council is the UK's international body for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We operate as the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in Beijing and Cultural and Education Section of the British Consulates-General in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing, linking young people in the UK and China. To find out more about the British Council’s activities in China, please visit www.britishcouncil.org.cn More information about school partnership opportunities with China can be found at http://www.britishcouncil.org/schoolpartnerships-china.htm

Expanding the international dimension in schools broadens the view of pupils, staff and the whole school community, creating active and aware global citizens. We work with government departments, teachers, school leaders and students throughout the UK and around the world to internationalise teaching and learning in schools, with the added benefits of increased motivation, raised standards and enhanced delivery of other core education policies. To achieve this, we help schools to develop international partnerships, enhance language learning and boost the professional development of teachers and head teachers through a range of European and international partnership programmes, exchanges and placements, study visits and online resources. While many of these programmes are managed on behalf of partners and stakeholders, including the departments for education in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, DFID and the EC, we also deliver our own international programme - Connecting Classrooms - which partners clusters of schools in the UK and other countries and is currently active in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. This scheme continues to expand and is just getting off the ground in East Asia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust

The Chinese Networks at the SSAT works with mainstream schools which currently teach or are looking to introduce Mandarin Chinese and/or the study of China across the curriculum. The Networks consists of a comprehensive website covering the main issues surrounding the introduction and the development of China and Chinese in schools, a dedicated and very active e-forum, a full time project team and a team of experienced teachers who can offer advice and guidance. We hold a series of face to face events throughout the year to provide further specialist support for schools and run trips to China for students to experience the fascinating country, language and culture first hand.

In October 2006, the SSAT Confucius Institute became the first schools-based Confucius Institute in the world. In partnership with The Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) and Peking University, the SSAT Confucius Institute and Confucius Classrooms are facilitating the development of the teaching and learning of Mandarin Chinese and the study of China across the curriculum in a large number of schools across the country.
