This select exhibition of historical items from UCL Library Services Special Collections looks at early printed descriptions of encounters between the West and China. Through the medium of maps from the 17th to the 19th century, light is shed on attitudes to and knowledge of China. Examples of the study of art, antiquities and medical advances from China are presented as seen through European eyes. UCL, London's Global University was one of the first universities in the UK to provide for the academic study of China and to welcome students from the Far East. The exhibition points to the early academic appointments made in Oriental Studies at UCL.
Come visit 7 days a week in term time during library opening hours.
