China was the last country in the world to build steam locomotives for regular service and in the last twenty years it has become an increasingly popular destination for railway enthusiasts.
The National Railway Museum will host a new exhibition of photographs, a Chinese Festival and web exhibition alongside learning and community workshops. The exhibition, The Last days of Steam, will bring together images of locomotives taken by railway photographer Michael Rhodes.
A Chinese Festival will celebrate Chinese culture past and present with events including dance workshops and Chinese story-telling. The museum’s first solely web-based exhibition will show a modern view of China railways and, to celebrate the only Chinese locomotive in Europe, the museum is creating a new exhibition about the Chinese Engine with daily cab talks to help visitors understand how this engine operated.
