Andrew Franklin (1914-2002) worked in the Foreign Service from 1937-74 and became a connoisseur of Chinese art.  He bequeathed his collection to the museum in 2003.

The exhibition will look at the history of Chinese ceramics, the geography of China and Chinese culture, including:

• technological developments in ceramics over the centuries

• different types of decorative wares from the Tang, Song, Ming and Qing dynasties

• different provinces where Chinese ceramics were produced such as Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, Guangdong, Jiangxi and Fujian

• religion and philosophy, festivals and the story of tea

• the meeting between East and West, for instance Christian imagery on ceramics produced under Jesuit influence

Chinese community project

We will be working with the Chinese Community Centre to develop the interpretation of Aspects of China.  The 2001 Census records 5,106 people of Chinese ethnicity as living in Birmingham.  This accounts for 0.5% of the population of Birmingham.  Aspects of China offers BM&AG the opportunity to develop an exhibition and a programme of events involving the significant Chinese ethnic communities in Birmingham and the West Midlands region.

Please note: The Museum and Art Gallery opens at 10.30am on Friday and 12.00pm on Sunday and closes at 5.00pm every evening.
