‘China at Harewood’ is a collective name for a wide variety of events, exhibitions and activities throughout the 2008 season at Harewood. The main feature of the year will be the East Bedroom which has been re-hung with a stunning Chinese wallpaper dating back to the 1760s. This ‘lost’ wallpaper was found in the Carpenter’s Workshop and will now be on show for everyone to see. The accompanying exhibition highlights Harewood’s links with the East India Company and showcases exquisite ceramics, jade and furniture.
The contemporary exhibition will bring together the work of two Hong Kong based artists, Fiona Wong (b.1970) and Wilson Shieh Ka-Ko (b.1977). It will be the first time that these two fascinating Chinese artists have exhibited in the UK. Fiona Wong works using a wide range of traditional ceramic medium such as porcelain, terracotta and black stone clay. Wilson Shieh is a Hong Kong artist who brings together slightly surrealist, humorous and a very human approach to the highly stylised art of traditional brush painting known as gongbi.
On the 7th June 2008 Harewood will be hosting a dragon boat race for both community based and corporate teams. This exciting day will prove to be popular for all those involved, both rowing and spectating.
Throughout the year Harewood will host a whole series of events to fit in with the China at Harewood theme including calligraphy workshops, food tasting, walks in the Himalayan Garden and educational sessions such as traditional crafts and demonstrations including kite making, origami, lantern making and much more.
