An exhibition of rare Chinese astronomical prints.

When the Flemish Jesuit missionary Ferdinand Verbiest was given charge of the Imperial Observatory in Beijing in 1670, he set about re-equipping it with a new set of instruments. Over one hundred illustrations printed from woodblock onto exquisite rice paper detail the form and construction of these new instruments. The Armillary Spheres, celestial globes and quadrants of the Western world were given a beautiful Eastern twist, both decorative and practical.

These stunningly intricate woodblock prints are a fascinating insight into China's influences on Western scientific methods of the 17th Century.
