Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra

Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra

16/11/07

As part of the nationwide CHINA NOW festival, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra plays this celebratory concert at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall with conductor Yan Huichang and soloists Wong Chi-ching and Feng Shaoxian.

Founded in 1977, the 85-strong Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra is Hong Kong’s only professional full-sized orchestra using traditional Chinese instruments and in its 30-year history it has commissioned over 17,000 arrangements and new compositions. In addition to its participation in various festivals, it gives its own annual series of concerts and tours.

This London programme opens with Wang Ning’s Festivities, followed by Zho Jiping’s Tracing our roots with the Old Pagoda Tree, Sui Lijun’s Song of the Black Earth, Law Wing-fai’s A Thousand Brushstrokes and Peng Xiuwen’s Terracotta Warriors Fantasia which – for anyone who has seen the Terracotta Warrior exhibition at the British Museum – will be a must. The soloists are pipa-player Wong Chi-ching (the pipa is like a Chinese lyre) and Feng Shaoxian, both vocalist and sanxian player (a bass string instrument, like the baroque theorbo).

CHINA NOW is the UK’s largest ever festival of Chinese culture, with over 800 events happening nationwide during the first half of 2008.
