Major spring launch for Chinese bestseller

Penguin is gearing up for the worldwide English-language publication of major Chinese bestseller Wolf Totem next spring.
Over a million copies of the novel, which will be published simultaneously in the US, UK and Australia on 27th of March as a £17.99 hardback, have been sold in author Jiang Rong’s native China. It tells the story of an intellectual during the Cultural Revolution who is sent to inner Mongolia. Living with the nomadic people, he comes to understand their intense relationship with the wolves of the region. “The forces of modernity clash with an ancient civilisation,” said Hamish Hamilton publishing director Simon Prosser. Associate editor Juliet Mitchell said the book’s appeal stretches “from the literary end to the commercial”.
Interest in China is expected to increase in 2008 owing to the Beijing Olympics and the UK-wide six-month CHINA NOW festival.
