“CHINA NOW will strengthen the understanding and friendship between China and the UK. We must work together to make the festival a success.”
Wen Jiabao
Premier, People’s Republic of China
CHINA NOW, the UK’s largest ever festival of Chinese culture, will go live in
February 2008 to coincide with the start of the Chinese New Year and continue
to the end of July 2008 and the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.
With over 800 events across the UK, this celebration of a vibrant, dynamic and
fast-evolving nation will showcase the very best aspects of contemporary Chinese
society and culture and offer an insight into its history.
Conceived by the business community, the festival will encompass art, design,
cuisine and culture, science, business and technology, education and sport. At
the heart of the festival will be an extensive educational programme.
John Swire & Sons Ltd is one of the founding partners of the festival and Cathay
Pacific is its official sponsor. Since Swire first opened an office in Shanghai in
1866, the company has set out to foster closer relations between British and
Chinese businessmen and their respective governments. Swire’s philosophy has
been that business can only flourish in an atmosphere of mutual respect and
trust and we are proud of the relationships we have built and the reputation we
have established down the years. With China powering ahead on the economic
world stage, we believe that now more than ever it is time to forge stronger links
between the two nations.
