Monkey! tells the thrilling, comic story of the irrepressible, mischievous Monkey King and his friends Pigsy and Sandy, as they accompany the monk Tripitaka in his journey to the Western Heaven.

This will be a promenade, storytelling-style production of the Chinese classic, ‘Journey to the West’, directed by British-Chinese director Jonathan Man. The production is aimed at children ages 7+.

Polka Theatre has a vibrant, successful strand of work called ‘World of Stories of Music’ that brings stories from different cultures to a local family audience. This production will develop a playful, storytelling approach to Monkey!, telling this epic tale with only 2 actors and a handful of props.

Also, what makes this show special is that it will take you on a journey of your own. Polka is more than just a theatre. There’s a café, playground, garden, foyer with toys and books, and exhibition spaces. This production will bring the whole building to life, spilling out of the auditorium, using other spaces in fun and unusual ways. It’s an end-of-term, start-of-the-summer treat, a fast-paced, hilarious, spiritual adventure.
